DIV 2 FOOTBALL VS MITCHELSTOWN

Monday 3rd April we played Mitchelstown in Div 2 football league. Conditions were poor but a tough game was played anyway. Following a few knocks in the previous hurling games we were missing a few players. Heavy ground slowed the play somewhat as both teams found it difficult to make ground. Despite conceding scores early in the first half, we pulled back to be only a point down at half time with the scores being 0-5 to 0-6 in favour of Mitchelstown. Unfortunately in the second half we fell further behind as Town’s football experience and training helped them a lot. A penalty by Kenneth Barry was well saved by the Mitchelstown keeper to which put a dent in our comeback hopes early in the second half. The game finished 0-13 to 0-7 in favour of Mitchelstown.

Team: S. Donegan, R. Burke, B. Sheedy, C. McCarthy, C. O’Reilly, H. Burke, P. Fitzgerald, K. Barry, S. Lynch, R. McHugh, E. McHugh, V. Burke, B. O’Regan, P. Burke, J. O’Dwyer. Subs: A. Sheedy for B O’Regan, B. Hayes for R McHugh.

GOOD WIN FOR HURLERS

On Sunday 2nd April we were out again in hurling league action as we took on Dromina. This was a very close game for the most part, with Shanballymore only really pulling clear in the 2nd half. Both teams started strongly trading scores for the most part. Even when Dromina scored a goal, Shanballymore were quick to respond with one of our own through Brian Sheedy. Darragh Palmer & Robert McHugh in midfield won and broke a lot of ball in the opening half. Half time arrived with the teams level at 1-9 each.

From the outset of the 2nd half it was clear that Shanballymore weren’t going to be leaving league points slip here as we dug a little bit deeper and started to pull away. We looked a bit fitter on the ball and strung together some great teamwork with Colman O’Reilly, Darragh Palmer and Jamie Sheedy winning a lot of ball. Our major break came just over 10 minutes into the 2nd half when Eoin O’Regan, Colman and Haulie Burke combined for a great goal. A free from Jamie Sheedy just after this gave us 1-3 unanswered. We were unlucky not to score further goals shortly after as we hit the crossbar twice in quick succession. For the most part Dromina’s scoring was limited to frees in the second half despite several dangerous moments when our backs had to be at their best to stop attacks. The half back line in particular held strong in the last quarter to knock back Dromina’s efforts. Final score was 2-19 to 1-16, a great win for Shanballymore.

Team & Scorers: S. Donegan, J. Hayes, E, McHugh, P. Fitzgerald, J. Fitzgerald, S. Lynch, B. Sheedy, D. Palmer (0-1), R. McHugh (0-1), E. O’Regan (0-2), B. O’Reilly (0-1), C. O’Reilly (0-5), J. Sheedy (0-7, 6 from free/65), B. Sheedy (1-1), R. Burke.  Subs: H. Burke (1-2) for R. Burke. R. McCarthy for R. Mchugh.

When our players get into the game they took control of the game, keeping Bride Rovers at bay while also scoring some fine goals and points of their own. In fairness to Bride Rovers they rallied again just before the short whistle to steam the scoring spear of Shanballymore. On the change over and with the wind at our back we made a couple of positional changes that helped us to we hit the ground running. In this period our forwards and midfield pair got some fine goals and points. In goals in the first half Peter pulled of some tremendous saves when we needed them, in front of Peter, Daniel, Aine and Dean but in fine performances with some great blocks and clearances. In midfield Jack and Micheal played some brilliant football, making long runs and providing scores for our forwards while also getting on the score sheet themselves. For the second half Jack Twomey went into goals, Jack’s kickouts had a big bearing on the game as he found his man with every kick-out. Peter, and Rory now formed a formidable backline with Aine Burke keeping the Bride Rovers forward line at bay for most of this half. Michael and Dean ran them selves into the ground for the second half. Up front Cian contunied his fine form fronm the first half buy getting a hatrick of goals. SHANBALLYMORE GAA SOCIAL A GREAT SUCCESS

Team photo.jpg

On Friday 10th February we came together in Springfort Hall Hotel to celebrate the achievements of the club over the course of the past 2 years and also to remember the North Cork winning teams of 1996/1997. A huge crowd of players past and present, family and friends was in attendance on the night as we celebrated the Munster and All Ireland Junior B success of least year, continuing on from North Cork and County successes in 2015. Guests of honour on the night included Barry Aherne chair of Avondhu GAA, Tracey Kennedy Vice chair of Cork GAA board, Seán Og O Hailpin and a delegation from Kileedy GAA club who organise the Junior B All Ireland series.

Club chairman Richie Burke welcomed the crowd on the night with a brief recap of what happened on the road to All Ireland success. He also reflected on the decision to honour the teams of 1996/1997 for the 20th anniversary of Shanballymore winning back to back Junior A North Cork titles. Pat Walsh along with the other selectors from 1996/97 then presented a framed team photo to the members of those teams in attendance on the night. Richie acknowledged and thanked the members of Kileedy GAA club in attendance for organising and running the Junior B All Ireland series.

Our trainer Jim Sullivan spoke briefly on the commitment put in by the team over the last 2 years, also acknowledging the sacrifices made by partners, wives and families of the players and thanking them. Sean Og then presented players with their medals while Jim called all the players in turn. The medals in question were beautifully presented in a frame put together by Padraig  and Zoe Fitzgerald with the Shanballymore crest, players name and the date of winning the medal. For this we owe Padraig and Zoe a huge thanks as these will be fantastic momentos for players in years to come. Sean Og spoke briefly on the importance of an All Ireland title, from Junior B right up to Senior level.

hall-of-fame1

The final item on the agenda for the night was the announcement of the Hall of Fame recipient. This years recipient was Noreen Burke who is without doubt a most worthy recipient. She has given countless years of service to the club as Secretary, 1st aider, organiser of the Cork GAA raffle and also handles the clubs allocation of tickets for Cork games among countless other services to the club. Her family has also gone on to play a huge part in Shanballymore GAA. Congratulations once more to Noreen and all the Burke family on your induction to the hall of fame, it is truly well deserved.

This event took place in Nemo Rangers GAA complex with club chairman Dave Twomey and Secretary Tony McGuickin in attendance. Rebel Óg Coaching Benchmarks provides a template for best practice in coaching, promoting maximum participation and optimal playing standards in juvenile clubs throughout Cork city and county. The program includes minimum requirements for entry, with subsequent progression to Bronze, Silver and Gold targets, which clubs would strive to achieve. Bronze criteria are based on establishing a primary school coaching and games program in schools within a club’s catchment area. Along with hosting a number of games and a summer skills camp. Shanballymore are one of only a few clubs in the North Cork region to be recognised by the Rebel Og board. This certificate, shows the hard work that is being put in by club Chairman Dave Twomey, Secretary Tony McGuickin and Treasure Collette Looney along with all the coaches of the various teams and our schools link officer Kenneth Barry.

SHANBALLYMORE JUVENILE AGM A SUCCESS

Last Saturday night Shanballymore Juvenile club held their AGM in front of a large crowd. Chairman Dave Twomey began the meeting by welcoming everybody in attendance. He outlined that this year had been another busy year for all involved in the club with a number of games and club activities taking place throughout the year. A lot of hard work has been put in behind the scenes by several people and he would like to sincerely thank them for this work, as without it the club would not run so smoothly.  We had several teams involved in various games at various venues throughout the year and all players should be proud of the effort they put in. Dave addressed the topic of our amalgamation with Glanworth under the St Dominic’s name for under 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and minors. He outlined that it has been a great success so far with a good turnout for training and matches by players from Shanballymore. Our players should feel very proud with great reports from St Dominic’s about their commitment in making this much-needed amalgamation a success.

Dave thanked the national school, John Walsh and his staff for their entire corporation shown all year, the national school is a very important area for any juvenile club that wants to be successful and this is possibly the best place to start training the kids on a regular basis. This year the Juvenile Club paid for a qualified coach to go into the school for a period of 6 weeks to train the kids the basic skills of hurling and football, this was backed up by the fantastic work of our school link officer Kenneth Barry, this additional coaching will pay dividends in the future and is something we are committed in proceeding with again for the coming year.

GOLF CLASSIC A BIG SUCCESS

The 2016 Shanballymore GAA golf classic took place in the well prepared Doneraile golf club last Saturday and now in its eight year it turned out to be a major success with members, players and supporters of Shanballymore GAA club taking to the course on wet windy day that thankfully didn’t dampen the spirits of the players.

The first set of golfer’s set off at 8.10am and twelve hours later the last team putted on the eighteenth green and bought an end to another successful days golf. This very well supported event is a great chance for the players to swap the hurling field with the golf course but reports are that the word “Four” was heard from early morning to late evening and a number of golf balls could be seen drifting off into the many trees around the course, but the strong winds are getting most of the blame for this.

When all players were finished their round of golf they were treated to a dinner and a big thank you to Mary and her staff for the outstanding service provided throughout the day. The presentation night in the club house was kicked off with local singer John Curran getting the large crowd going and keeping everyone entertained for the night. Conor Hannon was on hand to thank those who helped out in the lead up to the event and on the day.

A big thanks to Doneraile golf club who every year have the course in wonderful condition, thanks to all the organising committee who put many hours into making sure the event went off without a hitch. Thanks to Mary O’Regan, Noreen Burke, Helen McCarthy and Mag Buckley for all their help during the day in the club house.

A big thanks to our main sponsor Micheal O’Donovan and family of Sherry Fitzgerald O’Donovan who have been behind the team and club for many years and thankfully remain to be main sponsor of the team. A special thanks to everybody who sponsored teams, tee box’s and greens on the day and to all the players who took to the course and braved the elements and made the day very enjoyable.
