CHANGING OF THE GUARD

On Saturday evening January 13th at Shanballymore Community Centre Shanballymore GAA Club held a most successful AGM in front of the large crowd Present.  Long Serving Club Executives Noreen Burke and Mary O’Regan gave very detailed reports on their Secretary and Treasurer Briefs and outgoing Chairman Richard Burke reflected on his time in the Chair over the last decade.

Noreens report gave great detail on activities on the field of play in all competitions and events held throughout the year in the club. Noreens report card called out that in some competitions we could do better and maybe could push for more honours if we can tweak things a little on the big days but recognized one of the high points of the year was our 2nd Hurling team winning the Avondhu Div3 League. To field in this competition is a good success but to go out and win every game and lift the title against a very strong Kilshannig team in a pulsating final was a Major achievement for Shanballymore and showed that we have great strength in depth in our Hurling Panel. Noreen gave special mention to and expressed her gratitude and pride in receiving the Shanballymore GAA Hall of fame award in 2017.  A most deserved recognition of her unparalleled commitment to Shanballymore GAA.

Mary gave an in-depth overview of the Club Finances showing the cost of running a club and where members money has been used this past year. Mary drew attention to Annual Golf Classic Golf Classic and how successful it was again in 2017 in boosting the club coffers and enabling us to meet all financial commitments during the year. Mary gave an overview of where we are at with our land Purchase project which is now nearing completion. (More information will be shared directly with all subscribers in the coming weeks on the current status and close out of this project). Over the last number of years Mary has kept a very tight rein on unnecessary or discrepancy spending and this has helped greatly in the successful operation of our club.

After a decade in the Chair Sitting Chairman Richard Burke had indicated prior to this years AGM that he would not be letting his name go forward for reinstatement in 2018 due to Work travel and family commitments but would consider a lesser time-consuming role in the club Executive. He also felt that the time was right now to step aside and to introduce renewed freshness and energy and to break the link between the person and role. Looking back over the last number of years Richard reflected on many of the successes of the club on the field of play and in club developments and events and also called out the challenges ahead. Signing off he vacates the chair with the club in a healthy state, with good coaching structures, a committed and able large player base with a great togetherness between players, supporters and members and a number of development projects at the Shovel ready state that he will stay involved in with the new chairman to get over the line, much to look forward to and build on in the coming months and years ahead.

Ted Fouhy Lifetime Club President next Presided over the Election of officers for the coming season. Kenneth Barry stepped forward to assume the role of chairman for 2018. Kenneth is a great man to lead the club forward in the coming months and years. A man with a Keen interest in all things Shanballymore and a proven track record and with a great work ethic; The club is again in safe hands with Kenneth at the helm. Kenneth in recent years was club PRO, Football Manager and previously did a great job as Shanballymore Juvenile Club Chairman. Kenneth will be ably assisted by Eamonn Fitzgerald as Vice Chairman. Taking the Chair Kenneth was fulsome in his praise for the efforts and achievements of the outgoing Chairman and his words met with a loud round of applause from all present. The new Chairman has hit the ground running from Day one with great work already underway in driving the Win the League Win the Car Draw.

Alan Sheedy assistant Secretary will work closely with Noreen Burke in the year ahead on Secretarial Duties. All present were delighted that Both Noreen Burke and Mary Regan will remain in their important roles as Secretary and Treasurer in 2018 and will continue to bring the vast experience and knowledge that they have in running the club to bear. Richard Burke assumes the role of Club PRO for the coming year and Brian O’Regan will be working with him.

Tom Palmer was proposed and Seconded many times to continue on the great work that he has been doing over the last number of years as Hurling Manager and he will elect his own Management Team and also already has a very strong Coach in place for the coming year. Dave Twomey will also maintain his role as Football Manager and also will instate his own management team for the coming year. There is much to build on from 2017 and much to look forward to in both codes in 2018 and if we can unlock just that little bit more in the coming months and ensure to bring it all on the big days 2018 could be the best year yet!!!
