We played Mitchelstown who had made a positive start to the div 2 football league with two wins and a draw from their first three games but thankfully we were able to get on top from the start and lead the game all through to take the league points on offer.
Alan Sheedy had our first point after two minutes after a neat pass from Eamonn Fitzgerald and this was followed by two quick points from Kenneth Barry to see us leading 0-3 to 0-0 after five minutes. Mitchelstown who looked very lively going forward were creating chances but they were well marshaled by our outstanding defence who put in a very mature performance and kept the town lads at bay in the first half.
Brendan Hayes, Richard Burke , Haulie Burke, Rob McHugh and Brian Sheedy put in a great hour’s football and played some great play out of the defence when under pressure from the town forwards. Behind them Stephen Donegan again showed that he is a top quality goal keeper with some excellent kick outs and as always was very good under any high ball that came his way. Town had their first score after ten minutes when the got in for a well taken point but we answered with a point of our own when Eoin McHugh set up Kenneth Barry for the score.
Town responded again with a pointed free to leave two points between the sides and in our next attack Sean Lynch won possession and he set Eoin O’Regan on his way down the wing and Eoin played a pin point pass into the square to Vincent Burke who was upended by the town keeper as he gained possession and a penalty was awarded which was slotted away by Kenneth Barry to give us a good lead heading into half time 1-4 to 0-3.
The second half saw us play with a slight breeze into the village end and from the off we stretched our lead when the excellent Alan Sheedy pointed after a great run by Rob McHugh. Town responded quickly with two well taken points but wing back Colman O’Reilly scored a beauty after a great run up the wing. Eoin McHugh with a pin point pass set up Kenneth Barry for point number eight and Colman O’Reilly got through for his second of the day after a great passing movement between Vincent Burke and Eoin O’Regan.
This saw us lead 1-10 to 0-5 with ten minutes remaining but town to their credit never gave up and kept the score board ticking over with a few points of their own. We finished the game very strongly with our defence on top and got some excellent points in the last few minutes with Alan Sheedy getting two brilliant points and Haulie Burke and Kenneth Barry finishing off the scoring to see us run out convincing winners in the end 1-13 to 0-9.
