Last Saturday night in Blarney we kicked off our football championship when we came up against Kilmeen from the west Cork region but unfortunately on the night we met a team that were in top form and played some fast open football that we had no answer for.
We were also without the services of six regulars which made this a mountain to climb. Kilmeen started on the front foot and had three early points before Eoin McHugh had our first score from a free after a foul on Vince, we were finding it hard to break down a well drilled Kilmeen Defence and they were breaking fast down field which resulted in a few more points to give them a comfortable lead at half time 0-9 to 0-1.
The second half started off the with Kilmeen goaling after 30 seconds and they followed this with a second goal a few minutes later and this put the game out of sight for us, trailing 2-9 to 0-1 we had our best spell of the game when we had three points in a row from Vincent Burke, Kenneth Barry and another free from Eoin McHugh after Paul Burke was fouled. Kilmeen added a few of their own to stretch the lead again and we had our last score when Rob McHugh made a long run and pointed from thirty yards, the last few minutes were played out with Kilmeen adding two more points to run out comfortable winners in the end by 2-15 to 0-5.
We now go into round two which will be played Saturday week with opponents and venue to be decided and hopefully we’ll have a full strength squad available so we can put in a strong performance and get back to winning ways in this years football championship.
