CAPTAIN O’REILLY LEADS BY EXAMPLE

If a captain’s role is to lead by example, then Brian O’Reilly certainly fitted the bill for Shanballymore last Friday night.

After Bantry Blues had reduced a six-point deficit to the minimum, and appeared to have the momentum with them, it was O’Reilly who did most to derail the West-Cork side’s recovery in the dying minutes

In setting Colman O’Reilly for a point and posting another himself, he ensured that Shanballymore remained in front until the finish, and his personal tally of five points from play is testimony to how invaluable his contribution was overall.

“I’d be happy enough with my own performance, and I regard it as a great honour to be chosen to captain the team this year. But it’s only a title at the end of the day, because, apart from going up for the toss and collecting the cup, my job was no different than any other player, and you could see tonight there are leaders all over this side,” he said.

“It was an excellent team performance that got us through, but we knew coming up that Bantry were always likely to bring out the best in us. They showed in the semi final against Dromtarriffe, who were in the final last year, just how good a team they were, so we were under no illusions we would need to perform better than we had all year in order to get the win. Thankfully we did that, and even the subs who came on made a difference,” he pointed out.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win a county title, and it’s a great boost for the club, because we haven’t enjoyed much success over the last fifty years or so.

“It’s a reward for all the hard training we have done since January, and I have to say it’s a privilege to be involved with such a dedicated group of players.”

O’Reilly said he was always fairly confident Shanballymore were playing well enough to win the game, although he felt they should have done better in the first half when they wasted a lot of chances.

“We were just a point up at half time, and we knew coming out for the second half that we had to put in a serious effort. The goal from Dylan O’Callaghan gave us the start we wanted, and we drove on for a while, but we had to dig deep after Bantry came back at us near the end.”

“We are going up to junior ‘A’ now, and we’ll be hoping to make a mark there next year, but the season isn’t over for us yet, because we have the North-Cork championship to aim at in the coming weeks. We’ll be going all out to win that, and it would bring the curtain down on a truly memorable year for the club if we do.

HANNON GETS OVERDUE REWARD FOR HIS SERVICE

IT’S generally accepted that Conor Hannon was one of the best hurlers ever to play for Shanballymore.

He won a county senior medal with Avondhu in 1996, picking up the man-of-the-match award following an outstanding display at full back in the final against Imokilly, but he enjoyed little success over the course of a lengthy career at club level.

So, it obviously gave him immense satisfaction to serve as a selector with the Shanballymore team that lifted the county junior ‘B’ hurling title at Pairc Ui Rinn last Friday evening.
It bridged a gap of 64 years, with the club’s previous taste of county championship glory occurring at intermediate level in 1951, and Hannon is hoping it will be a the stepping stone to greater things in the years ahead.

“We have been competing at junior ‘B’ level for far too long, and we’re delighted to get out of it now. These guys are well capable of playing junior ‘A’, they have come on a lot over the past 12 months, so we are really looking forward to pitting ourselves against some of the top junior teams in North-Cork next year,” he said.

“We were very confident coming up, to be honest, we felt we had the team to win, but we said to the lads that a county final can take on a life of its own, and you have to go out and make things happen for you, because it can pass you by fairly quickly otherwise. I thought it took the players a while to realise that, and we were very disappointed with how easily Bantry got an early goal.

“We felt our discipline was poor at times in the first half as well, we also hit some bad wides, but we had a good chat with the lads at half time, and I think we ironed out a few bits and pieces.” Hannon agreed it was very important that Shanballymore, leading by just a point at the interval having played with the wind, started well in the second half.

“Dylan O’Callaghan’s goal certainly gave us a huge boost after half time, and we built on it to go six points up, but, fair play to Bantry, they came back strongly, and it was heart-stopping stuff there near the end.

“I have no hesitation in saying I found it a lot harder standing on the line than playing, but, thankfully, we held on, and I thought Eoin McHugh was outstanding at full back in the closing stages.”Hannon stressed that every player contributed to Shanballymore’s performance, revealing he was satisfied they were probably the better team after they had responded to Bantry’s early goal with five points on the trot.

“Having said that, Bantry really put it up to us, and we’re just delighted we got the win, and that we’ll be back playing junior ‘A’ hurling next year.”

FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE SETS UP COUNTY FINAL DATE.

Shanballymore 1-16 Randal Óg 1-7

On the night we proved that fitness, heart and never say die attitude were key factors to our success and now for the first time since 1951 we have a chance of bringing a county final back to Shanballymore.

The first half was a very dogged close affair with the lead swapping hands on a number of occasions, with both teams tied at 0-6 a piece at the short whistle. Randal Óg were first to score after 3 mins before Jamie Sheedy who was deadly accurate from place balls all day had us on level terms in the 6th minute.

Points were swapped from play with Randal again scoring a well taken point before captain Brian O’Reilly slotted over from the end line to draw us level again. We then had the misfortune of going a man down when our corner back was given a second yellow card and now we had to rejig the team with Alan Sheedy moving from corner forward to corner back and Colman O’Reilly and Vincent Burke making up a two man inside forward line.

We took the lead when Jamie pointed another free after Brian Sheedy was fouled but back came Randal og with two pointed frees of their own to lead 0-4 to 0-3 after 20 mins played. Hallie Burke had the game level again with a fine effort after one of his trade mark surging runs.

At this stage the game was beginning to become a slog with both teams going at each other at every opportunity. Randal Óg had another pointed free before Colman found some room inside and latched on to a great ball from Jerome to get our fifth point to again see us on level terms coming up to the break. Another conceded free was put over by Randal Óg to hold a slender lead with the half nearly up, however we had our last point of the first half when a puck out by keeper Declan Fitzgibbon was gathered by Jamie and he pointed to see us go in at half time on level terms.

We knew that it was going to take an outstanding effort in the second half to overcome a very tough and physical Randal Óg team who had a one man advantage. We came out in the second half a totally different team and from the start blitzed Randal og with points from all angles to leave them stunned.

Brian and Colman O’Reilly started the scoring with two quick fire points from play before sub Dylan O’Callaghan got on the score sheet with one of his own, this gave us a three point lead. Our inside back line of Eoin McHugh, Jonathan Dennehy and Alan Sheedy were letting noting through and outside them our half back line of Sean Lynch, Eoin O’Regan and Jerome Fitzgerald were dominating this sector of the field.

Two Jamie frees were put over at ease before his brother Brian popped over our 12th point to put six between the teams with 15 minutes to go. Randal Óg got their first point of the second half and they followed this with a goal to come within two points 0-12 to 1-7.

Paul Burke who had replaced Vincent Burke was fouled going through and Jamie again obliged and pointed. Dylan and Colman had two points inside a minute to stretch our lead again and put some daylight between the teams and for the next few minutes it was backs to the wall as Randal Óg went in search of another goal but with bodies being thrown on the line there was no way that Randal Óg could get through.

With a five point lead and only 4 minutes remaining we got the insurance score when a ball into the forward line was gathered by Dylan and he burst past his marker before lobbing the on rushing keeper to give us an 8 point lead with time almost up. The last point of the game was scored by the very impressive Colman O’Reilly who had worked his socks off all day and when he sent over his 4th and our last point we knew that we were well on our way to a county final.

On the puck out the referee blew for full time and there was a hugh cheer from the large Shanballymore following who for many years have waited for this opportunity to cheer the team into a county final. The final will be played next Friday night in Pairc Ui Rinn with a throw in time of 8:15 pm.

This will be a great occasion for the team, supporters and the club, and we will be calling on all Shanballymore supporters near and far to come and see this team create their own bit of history and hopefully bring the cup home to the village on Friday night.

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE

Shanballymore 1-15 Ballinhassig 0-12.

Last Thursday night we played our third game in the space of five days when we travelled to Doneraile to play Ballinhassig in round two of the county league. We had a big win against Ballygarvan in round one and were hoping to continue our winning ways.

On the night it was obvious that the three games in a short space of time was taking its toll on us as there looked to be a lot of tired bodies at times but credit to this bunch of players they dug deep when they had to and after holding a two point lead at half time 0-9 to 0-7 the kicked on a bit in the last fifteen minutes of the game and out scored Ballinhassig to run out six point winners in the end.

We were short a few for this game with Richard Burke, Hallie Burke, Paul Burke, Padraig Fitzgerald and Eoin McHugh all out for various reasons but with competition for places very high those who came in gave the selectors plenty of options for the up coming games.

Team: Declan Fitzgibbon, James Hayes, Jonathan Dennehy, Brendan Hayes, Eoin O’Regan, Sean Lynch, Robert McHugh, Darren Roche(0-1), Kenneth Barry,  Brian Sheedy(0-3),  Jamie Sheedy(0-2), Brian O’Reilly(0-1), Alan Sheedy, Colman O’Reilly(0-4), Mick O’Donovan. Subs: Eamon Fitzgerald(0-2) for Kenneth Barry, Dylan O’Callaghan(1-3) for Alan Sheedy, Vincent Burke for Mick O’Donovan, Brian O’Regan.
